Playing Catch-Up…

Posted in Spoilers, Site Updates, General News by Craig on October 20th, 2007 | Permalink

Hello, BionicWebsite visitors!

I’d like to apologize to all of you for not having an announcement about this week’s episode, “Face Off,” or a link to the forum on Wednesday night. I was on airplanes all day, returning to L.A. from Maryland, and just was unable to catch up. If you’d like to discuss “Face Off” with other fans, be sure to visit the forum.

Other announcements: The spoilers page has been updated with information on the next two episodes, so check that out.

Ratings for Bionic Woman have still been fairly good but they’ve been moving downward; a trend that hopefully will not continue. As of this writing only the initial 13 episodes have been ordered.

I’d also like to ask those of you who may be reading: Has Bionic Woman been living up to your expectations? I’ll be honest, and I hate to say this considering I’ve set up this website and everything - I’m a bit disappointed thus far. I know there has been a lot of behind-the-scenes reshuffling, and hopefully it will recover, but I’m not totally sure. There are some good actors on this show (especially Miguel Ferrer, who has been excellent in everything he’s done), but it seems like four episodes in, the only character I myself seem to care about is Sarah Corvus. It’s not that I dislike Jaime et al, I just have a bit of trouble caring. Is anyone else having this problem? I’m going to try and make it so comments are allowed on this one because I’m curious what you may think. (I’m not sure how to access the Comment feature from the main page, so access this individual article and scroll down to the bottom in order to comment.)

I just hope I can continue to do a competent job on this site when the excitement has died down a bit. Hopefully the next few episodes will re-energize the spark the original trailer had, which inspired me to create BionicWebsite in the first place.

I think everyone feels that there is a sizable gap between what we expected from BW and what it has delivered so far.

I wanted “Alias II” but that isn’t happening. However, lessons could be learned from Sydney Bristow and Co. For starters, come up with an enemy organization to rival Burket. Come up with an SD-6 or and Alliance or a Prophet Five. This bad-guy-of-the-week is no good. “Alias” found this out in Season 4, when they mistakenly opted for self-contained eppies with throwaway baddies. I think they need to build a story and move it along throughout 22 eppies, not settle it within the hour.

I thought the Pilot suffered from bad dialogue. Visually it was great but the dialogue was unnatural at best. The 2nd episode was atrociously bad, it made the Pilot look like Emmy material. The story was bad, the bad guys in army drag were brutal, the survivor girl should have been gassed with the rest of the town.

Third episode IMO, was much improved over the 2nd, but still, what the heck is Jaime doing babysitting a teenage brat? Can you see Arvin Sloane tasking Sydney to look after a spoiled teenager?

Fourth show was the best so far, again IMO, but not without flaws. Why the hell did Jaime give the flash drive back to the guy before she rumbled with Antonio? Did she really think it was safer with that guy than it would be with her?

So far, BW strikes me as being a show about relationships. The poorly organized and executed mission-of-the-week seems to be window dressing for a relationship show, and I don’t think that’s what anyone was expecting. Certainly not what I was geared up for.

David Eick needs to go back and watch Phase One from “Alias”. If he can come up with something that compelling, if he can conjure up that kind of life or death tension, he’ll get this show past the 13th episode. If he can’t elevate his game, this goose is gonna get cooked.

    Page48,

I loved the Phase One episode of “Alias.” Actually, I got a big “Alias” vibe from the Bionic Woman pilot, but not necessarily favorable… I think that even though Jennifer Garner might not have been “excellent” from the beginning, she was surrounded by fascinating characters and actors like Jack Bristow and Arvin Sloane which leveled it off a bit. I thought “Alias” had a lot better direction, too.

I know actors like Miguel Ferrer and Molly Price could easily pull things off if given the same level of writing and direction you saw on “Alias.” (I can’t really comment on the others because I haven’t seen much of their work)

I’m glad the BW writers have - in their own way - addressed the lack of visible chemistry between Jaime and Will from the pilot, but I still don’t really feel I can identify with or feel for the Jaime character. She seems to have this continual “the world craps on me” attitude, but I think in order to care I have to *like* her a little bit. I did like Sydney Bristow. Although we shall not discuss seasons 4 and 5 of her show because they aren’t anywhere near the level of the first 2 seasons, especially.

To be a relationship show I think you need to care about the relationships, and so far, aside from Sarah Corvus stuff, I’m not feeling it so much.

Another actor or character I DO like is Mark Shepard’s Anthony Anthros - but we haven’t seen a whole lot of him, but still, I even care about *him* more than I care about Jaime.

It’s just intersting… as simplistic and formulaic as Lindsay Wagner’s Bionic Woman was, it had charm and a very likeable lead character. Some “legends” might not need to be revisited… maybe this take on “Bionic Woman” was a mistake.

I do find it telling that Eick & co. wanted to do a series like this BEFORE incorporating Jaime Sommers and the Bionic Woman. Though I’m pretty sure that without the familiar name that it may not have been picked up, nor would there have been much interest.

Sorry to babble so much in this response, by the way - you just hit on some very interesting points.

I have to admit,,, I’m a Katee Sackhoff Fan :) The only reason I was interested in the show in the 1st place was because of Katee. But with that said The show isn’t what I thought it was going to be,as far as action that I seen from the previews. And Craig I agree with what your saying about Sara Corvus and it’s not because I like Katee more she just seams more interesting than Jaime does. I’ve read alot of different articles about the BW and Katee/Sara gets all the press Michelle Ryan don’t get to much most of them say Katee upstages her when there in the same scene you don’t notice Michelle ??? But Sara’s the bad girl so isn’t she suppose to ? I think the show will pick up in rateing I don’t know nothing about the behind the scenes stuff but I figure the best is still to come Eick will fix it. And a lot could be due to the writes strike to on scripts and if they will have scripts to turn into shows I did read that BW is behind in production.

  5. Darren said,

    on October 23rd, 2007 at 3:21 pm

Honestly, though I love her in BSG, I was a bit apprehensive about Katee in this role. There was a big opportunity for “Evil Bionic Woman 1.0″ to be dumb, but this is the single aspect of the show that they have managed to pull off really well. Sarah is vulnerable and sympathetic, in addition to being a psychotic killer. ;)

I’m all for giving a new show lots of time to find its footing (TNG Season One, anyone?), but the rest of the series has been a tremendous disappointment so far. Will died from a gunshot wound to the shoulder? As he was originally written into the first several episodes (and was presumably a series regular), his sudden funeral at the start of #102 left me scratching my head.

I don’t mind a few episodes with Jaime exploring each individual ability, Smallville style, and learning to come to terms with her new body and new identity as a super spy who doesn’t really know what she is doing. That’s been fine, and her inexperience has even let me give the writers a pass on things like the babysitting story.

Production values and casting are obviously good, so I have to conclude that what makes the show feel so sub-par so far is the writing. Dialogue is frequently bad. Jaime’s character just is not likeable yet, and I blame that largely on her eagerness to get f***ed in a public bathroom stall. We’re supposed to like her after that scene? We’re supposed to find the rib-breaking thing cute in some way? I understand that they can’t have Jonas interrupt if they transplanted the scene to an apartment, but please.

So I’m right there with you, Craig. I’m trying to be positive and enthusiastic (and I even started a Web site based on the trailer!). But the writers really need to settle down and bring up their game. They have sowed a few seeds (Anthros, other black-ops groups like Berkut out there, etc.) that have some good potential, but they need to bring those into the fore rather than relegating them to throw-away references while Jaime goes on Pointless Mission #13 while simultaneously Hiding New Life From Becca and Boinking Passersby.

I forgot to include this little anecdote:

After the Berkut assault team cleared out the tanker truck drivers and soldiers at the end of “Paradise Lost,” my wife cautiously observed: “That was too easy …” As in, she was expecting a plot twist within the next few moments.

    Roll credits.

“Nope,” I replied. “The writing is just that bad.”
